We had quite an unusual Intro to Photography Workshop on March 22nd. First, we are very honored and excited that our workshop was sold out! We even had a couple people on the waiting list! So a huge thank you to everyone who made it out there! Secondly, it rained. And I don’t just mean it was sprinkling so people had a small towel over their cameras. I mean it poured. But this workshop was sold out! Which means we host it rain or shine. I personally enjoyed the challenge of shooting in the rain, we stayed on a giant porch at a Historical home in Downtown Roswell. We’ve used this porch before, but we usually explore the grounds during the class. This forced us to use the porch in new ways, and really explore our options! We had a lot of fun, and kept dry when we all thought it was impossible!

Rain doesn’t necessarily mean needing a high ISO. For example, on this particularly wet day, the sky was VERY bright which let most most students shoot at 200-400 ISO.

Check the back of your camera and zoom WAY in, is what you want to be in focus, in focus?

Every Intro Workshop we host a contest! This workshop’s winner was Haley! Haley sent in a number of tact sharp, well exposed, beautiful composed images, like the two below. I love the depth of field in this image of Georgiana below, her eyelashes to curls are in focus, but just like that the siding of the house falls out of focus. It’s a beautiful way to draw the viewer straight into the eyes of the photography.

It can be very scary to get this close to a model, but Haley had no fear! great movement of her hair, sharpness, exposure. Brilliant! Great Job!

Can’t have a winner without a runner up! I am so glad Twylia submitted this next image. There is something about it, that I just can’t stop looking at. I love the expression Savannah is giving the camera. The image is well in focus, it just needs a little color balance editing and it’d be perfect. I can’t put my finger on why her expression is so.. startling, but I love it. What do you think?Twylia-Jones-1

FREEZE! Stop that action! Get the right exposure! Anyone who owns a camera, and doesn’t shoot on Auto, know that sometimes, capturing motion feels impossible. That’s when we advise you to slow down, and state your goals. You want to freeze action? What do you need? High shutter-speed. You’ve got to catch that moment before, during, and after it happens. Twylia did a great job of capture this jump mid air! Not bad for anyone’s first time on manual mode! Twylia-Jones-16

Thank you to everyone who came, and everyone that submitted their images for the contest. We are professional photographers and we are passionate about our jobs. We love sharing our knowledge with students like you. Everyone has a different eye, and that’s what makes photography so great! From camera settings and point of view, to post processing, no two photos are alike!

If you want to take your camera off Auto and join the crowd in shooting in Manual Mode, sign up for our next Intro to Photography workshop, today!
